What does the term Bounce Rate mean in your website analytics report? Bounce Rate is the percentage of visitors that enter a specific website page and leave that page without going to any other pages on your website. The visitor literally leaves the page they entered on.

Is a high bounce rate always bad?

Not necessarily. There are multiple reasons a page could have a high bounce rate that wouldn’t be considered negative. Sometimes higher bounce rates on certain pages can be expected. For example, if you promote a specific blog article on social media you may see a higher bounce rate on that page because the website visitor came to your site with the specific purpose to read the article. While some of these visitors may click for more content on your website, it shouldn’t surprise you that many others will leave the site after reading the blog article resulting in a higher bounce rate for that particular page.

While it’s true high bounce rates can sometimes be justified, they can also be a cause for concern (especially if you can’t think of any valid reason for the high bounce rate). If you suffer from high bounce rates it might be a sign you need to re-evaluate certain web pages to see why visitors are leaving the website after entering on those pages.

Here are some common reasons for high bounce rates:

• Slow loading pages.
• Annoying video or audio that auto plays on page load.
• Pop-ups.
• Poor quality content.
• Poorly written meta title and description tags that don’t match up with the content of the page.
• Poor user interface design.
• Most visitors obtaining needed information from certain entry pages.
• Website not mobile friendly.
• Pages with technical errors.
